With Shelly devices, you can maintain control even when your internet connection is down or unavailable. The Local Network Control feature in the Shelly Smart Control app allows you to operate your devices over your home Wi-Fi network, without relying on the cloud.

Enabling Local Network Control

To activate Local Network Control in the Shelly Smart Control app:

  1. Open the Shelly Smart Control app.

  2. Navigate to SettingsApp SettingsLocal Wi-Fi Network Control.

  3. Toggle "Use Local Network Control when available" to ON.

Once enabled, your mobile device will communicate directly with your Shelly devices over the local network, bypassing the need for an active internet connection.

What Works Without Internet (When Local Network Control is Enabled)

If both your mobile device and Shelly device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and Local Network Control is enabled, you’ll have access to key local functionalities:

  • Turn devices ON/OFF via the app

  • Access and control the following local services:

    • Pre-configured schedules saved on the device

    • HTTP actions and scripts stored locally

    • Real-time sensor readings and relay states

    • Device settings and configurations

This is made possible because the app communicates directly with the device over the local network, without going through the cloud.

What Doesn’t Work Without Internet

Some features are cloud-dependent and require an active internet connection. These will not function with only local access:

  • Cloud-based Scenes and Automations

  • Remote control from outside your local network

  • Cloud statistics and history

  • Device sharing with other users

  • Push notifications and third-party integrations (e.g., Alexa, Google Home)

Summary

  • Enabling Local Network Control allows for basic control of your Shelly devices via the app, as long as your phone and devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.

  • You’ll be able to perform actions like toggling devices and using saved schedules, even without an internet connection.

  • Cloud features such as remote access, notifications, and automation rules will require an active internet connection.

For best results, enable Local Network Control as a fallback option to maintain essential control when your internet is unavailable.
