Factory Reset of Shelly Wall Displays Using the Physical Switch (SW Input)

Modified on Thu, 11 Jun at 4:58 PM

This procedure can be used when the touchscreen cannot be accessed — for example, if the screen is locked, unresponsive, or the device is offline and settings cannot be opened.

The reset is triggered through the physical switch connected to the SW input, so no interaction with the display itself is required.

Requirements

Before starting, make sure:

  • The Wall Display is powered with Line (L) and Neutral (N).
  • A physical switch is connected to the SW input.
  • Operating the switch applies Line (L) to SW.

Because this procedure involves mains voltage, it should only be performed by a qualified electrician if safe access to the installation is not available.

Verify the Wiring

Check that the Wall Display is wired as follows:

TerminalConnection
LMains Line / Live
NNeutral
SWPhysical switch connected to Line (L)
OOptional load output (not required for reset)

Reset Steps

  1. Turn off power to the Wall Display.
  2. Verify that the device has Line (L) and Neutral (N), and that the switch is wired between L and SW.
  3. Restore power to the device.
  4. Once the display lights up and boot starts, a 60-second reset window becomes available.
  5. During this period, toggle the switch connected to SW five times in quick succession.
  6. Wait for the device to restart automatically.
  7. After reboot, add and configure the Wall Display again in the Shelly Smart Control app.

Expected Result

If the reset is successful, the Wall Display returns to factory settings.

The following data will be removed:

  • Local configuration
  • Wi-Fi credentials
  • Screen lock settings

After the reset, the device should become available again for Bluetooth discovery and onboarding in the Shelly Smart

Control app.

If the Reset Does Not Trigger

  • Power-cycle the device and repeat the procedure.
  • Make sure the five switch toggles are completed within the first 60 seconds after boot begins.
  • Verify that operating the switch actually applies Line (L) to the SW terminal.

Incorrect wiring of the SW input is the most common reason the reset procedure does not start.
