1. Check Device Compatibility
Before purchasing a Wave device, ensure that it is compatible with your Z-Wave gateway or hub. You can check the quick guide of tested gateways -> Tested Gateways with Shelly Wave devices.
2. Verify Z-Wave Frequency
Our Wave devices operates on different frequencies depending on the region. Ensure that the chosen Wave device's frequency matches the one supported by your gateway. Using devices with the correct frequency is crucial for proper communication. Examples of frequencies:
- 868.42 MHz (Europe)
- 908.42 MHz (North America)
- 921.42 MHz (Australia)
- 919.82 MHz (Russia)

3. Prepare Your Z-Wave Gateway
Ensure that your Z-Wave gateway or hub is powered on and connected to your home network. Refer to your gateway's user manual for specific setup instructions.
4. Place Your Device Near the Gateway
For an easier and more reliable inclusion process, place the Wave device in the proximity of the gateway during setup. Once included, you can move it to its desired location.
5. Initiate Inclusion on the Gateway
On your gateway's interface or mobile app, navigate to the device management section or inclusion menu. Start the inclusion process. This may involve clicking a button or following on-screen prompts after that your gateway will start searching for nearby Z-Wave devices.
6. Include the Z-Wave Device
The Wave devices have various adding modes, all of the modes are explained in the following article Adding (including) Shelly Wave devices here.
Note: Certain gateways offer the capability to select the desired security level for device inclusion. In that case you may choose from normal (no security), S0 (not recommended), S2 (enhanced security). Choose the one you prefer before you start adding the device.
Once your gateway is in inclusion mode, perform the action on the Wave device that activates its inclusion mode. Selecting higher security levels may require additional steps in the Gateway. Specifically, when adding a device utilising the S2 security standard, the user will be prompted to input the DSK (Device Security Key) PIN code. The gateway should detect the device. It may take 10 - 30 seconds for the inclusion process to complete.
7. Set Device Name & Location (Optional)
After successfully including the device in the gateway, you usually have the option to assign it a name and place it within a designated room. It is recommended to choose a descriptive name that clearly indicates the device's function and location. For instance, naming it "Kitchen Light" provides a clear understanding that the device is located in the kitchen and controls the lighting therein.
8. Configure the Wave device Parameters (Optional)
In certain scenarios, there may arise a necessity to customize or modify certain default parameters of Wave devices. For instance, if you wish to employ a button input instead of the default switch functionality in our Wave 1PM device, it becomes imperative to alter Parameter no.1 to a value of 0, which corresponds to push-button mode. For comprehensive information on the device's specific parameters, kindly consult the chosen device user guide.
9. Test the Device
After adding the Wave device, test its functionality to ensure it works as expected. You can use your gateway's interface or associated mobile app to control and monitor the device.
In the event that any functionality exhibits unexpected behavior, initial troubleshooting steps involve attempting to reconfigure the device using the gateway's commands (if available). If reconfiguration does not resolve the issue, consider removing and re-adding the device. Should the issue persist despite these efforts, we recommend consulting our provided solutions documentation or initiating a support ticket with our dedicated support team for further assistance.
10. Final Placement
If you have follow the recommendation of adding devices to the gateway in close proximity and now intend to relocate them to their designated positions within your residence, it is imperative to proceed accordingly. After the proper placement of all devices, it is advisable to initiate a network check (configuration) or any analogous command, should your gateway offer such functionality. This step aids in optimizing the network's performance and ensuring smooth device communication in their intended locations.
