What is the main difference between Shelly EM Gen1 and Shelly EM Gen3?

-Shelly EM Gen3 is the newer version of Shelly EM. It is built on the newer Shelly platform and has improved features, better diagnostics, Bluetooth support for setup, and newer local/API functionality.

What clamp is included with Shelly EM Gen3?

-Shelly EM Gen3 comes with one 50 A clamp included in the package.

Can Shelly EM Gen3 use two clamps?

-Yes. Shelly EM Gen3 supports up to two current transformer clamps. If you want to monitor two separate circuits, you need to purchase an additional compatible clamp.

Can I replace Shelly EM Gen1 directly with Shelly EM Gen3?

-Please note that the current transformers are different. Shelly EM Gen3 uses CT clamps with a connector, while Shelly EM Gen1 uses CT clamps with two bare wires. This means the old Shelly EM Gen1 clamps cannot be connected directly to Shelly EM Gen3 without the correct compatible connector.

What connector type does Shelly EM Gen3 use for the CT clamps?

-The connector type that Shelly EM Gen3 use for the CT Clamps is 2-pin MX3.0-2x1Y connector.

Can I use Shelly EM Gen1 clamps with Shelly EM Gen3, and can I use Shelly EM Gen3 clamps with Shelly EM Gen1?

-Yes, but only if the clamp type and rating are compatible.

Shelly EM Gen1 supports 50 A and 120 A CT clamps, while Shelly EM Gen3 supports 50 A and 80 A CT clamps. This means the 50 A clamp is the common compatible option between both devices.

The difference is the connection type. Shelly EM Gen1 clamps have two bare wires, while Shelly EM Gen3 clamps come with a 2-pin MX3.0-2x1Y connector.

A 50 A clamp from Shelly EM Gen3 can be used with Shelly EM Gen1 if the connector is removed and the two wires are connected correctly to the EM Gen1 terminals.

A 50 A clamp from Shelly EM Gen1 can also be used with Shelly EM Gen3 if the correct 2-pin MX3.0-2x1Y connector is fitted to the clamp wires.

Please note that this applies to compatible 50 A clamps only. A 120 A clamp from Shelly EM Gen1 should not be used with Shelly EM Gen3, because Shelly EM Gen3 supports 50 A and 80 A clamps, not 120 A.
