Below are several methods you can use to get your Shelly devices back online quickly.
Option 1: Keep the Old WiFi Name and Password
The easiest method is to configure your new router with the same SSID (WiFi name) and password as your old router.
This way, all your devices (phones, laptops, Shelly devices, etc.) will connect automatically, without needing any changes.
How to change your router SSID and password:
Connect your computer or phone to the new router (usually via WiFi or Ethernet cable).
Open a browser and enter the router’s IP address. Common ones are:
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.178.1
Check the sticker on the back of your router if unsure.
Log in with the admin username and password (often printed on the router).
Find the Wireless Settings or WiFi Settings section.
Change the SSID (WiFi name) and Password to match your old router’s settings.
Save and restart the router.
Your Shelly devices (and everything else) should reconnect automatically
Option 2: Use the Shelly App to Migrate Devices
If you want to use a new WiFi name and password, you can still migrate your devices smoothly.
Steps:
Plug in and power up both routers (the old and the new).
NOTE!! Make sure only the new router has DHCP enabled and disable the DHCP on the old router ( this is depending on how you connect the two routers together)
DHCP = the system that assigns IP addresses to devices on your network. If both routers are handing out IPs, they may conflict.
To disable DHCP on one router, check its settings under LAN/DHCP Server and switch it off.
Connect your phone to the old WiFi network.
Open the Shelly App.
Go to All Devices → tap the three dots (⋮) in the corner → select WiFi Batch Change.
Enter your new WiFi SSID and password.
Confirm the change. The Shelly devices will update and connect to the new WiFi automatically.
Option 3: Use a Mobile Hotspot Trick
If you don’t have your old router available:
On your phone, create a WiFi hotspot.
Give it the same SSID (WiFi name) and password as your old router.
Power on your Shelly devices they should connect to the hotspot (since it will have the same old WiFi name and password).
Once connected, open the Shelly App, and:
Go to the device → update its WiFi settings to your new router’s SSID and password.
Or use WiFi Batch Change as described in Option 2.
Option 4: Enable Device AP Before Changing Your Router
A good way to prepare before swapping routers is to enable the Device Access Point (AP) on your Shelly devices.
This creates a backup way to connect directly to each device, even if it loses its WiFi connection.
Steps:
Open the Shelly App.
Go to each device → Settings → Device AP.
Enable the AP mode.
When enabled, the device creates its own WiFi network (usually named something like
shelly-device-xxxxxx
).You can connect to it directly if the device goes offline.
After installing your new router:
Connect your phone or computer to the device’s AP WiFi.
Default AP IP address: 192.168.33.1
Open this address in your browser to access the device’s Web UI.
In the Web UI, go to: Settings → WiFi.
Under WiFi 1, enter your new router’s SSID (WiFi name) and password.
(If your device supports it, you can also add your old WiFi to WiFi 2 as a backup.)
Save and restart the device—it should now connect to your new WiFi.
NOTE !!! Once the device is back online, go back into the app and disable AP mode (to avoid unnecessary open networks).
Option 5: Reset the Devices
If you are unsure about the above options and or it never worked for you, you’ll need to factory reset each Shelly device and add it back to your network as if it were new.
NOTE !! Resetting the devices will remove all previous settings you had saved on the device so use this as a last option.
Resetting a Shelly device:
Press and hold the reset button (usually 10+ seconds) until the LED starts blinking – this confirms the reset.
Re-add the device in the Shelly App and connect it to your WiFi network.
Alternatively, you can trigger a reset depending on your Shelly generation:
Option 2 (Gen 1):
Switch off the circuit breaker for the circuit where the Shelly is installed.
Switch it on and off 5 times in a row (each phase must be under 5 seconds).
Finally, switch it back on.
All Shelly devices on that circuit will open their AP (access point) for 3 minutes. Connect to it and adjust settings via 192.168.33.1 in your browser.
Option 2 (Gen 2 & 3):
Press and hold the reset button on the back of the device for 5–10 seconds.
The Shelly will keep its existing settings but activate its AP.
Connect to the AP and configure it via 192.168.33.1 in your browser.
